What to do in Düren and the surrounding area

Düren is a town with around 90,000 inhabitants and is located on the edge of the North Eifel in the south-west of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The old paper industry town was almost completely destroyed in World War II. The cityscape today is therefore characterized by the many newly erected buildings from the 1950s.

The river Rur flows through Düren on its way from its source in the Belgian High Fens to its mouth in the Meuse near Roermond.

The Rur shaped the economic and industrial life of the city.
In the 15th century it was the textile industry and since the 18th century
it is the paper industry that Düren is known for.

Burgau Castle

Burgau Castle is approx. 3.5 km from the Domizil Hotel. The main castle of Schloss Burgau looks back on an eventful history. The first verifiable owner of the House of Burgau was the knight Amilius von Auwe/de Owe, who donated a pension in 1234 for his daughters who had entered the Burtscheid monastery.
Archaeological excavations in the north wing of the castle revealed a first construction period that can be assigned to around 1100.
The romantic moated castle presents itself in new splendor today. Destroyed in 1944, in ruins until 1975 and restored in 1998, the Burgau Castle is once again the jewel in the crown of the city of Düren.
